The St. Louis County Council convened to honor the life and legacy of Donald Zycan, a prominent community leader who passed away on July 26, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on March 1, 1952, Zycan was a beloved figure in the Florissant and greater North County area, known for his dedication to various community organizations and his role as a family man.
Zycan's extensive involvement in local initiatives included leadership positions in the Rotary Club of Florissant, the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce, and the Florissant Parks Foundation, among others. He served on the board of Commerce Bank and was particularly proud of his contributions to Christian hospitals, where he was a board member from 1999 to 2020, including terms as chairman and vice chairman. His efforts helped establish the hospital foundation, the Comfort Care suite, and the hybrid operating room at Christian Northeast, as well as the Seitman Cancer Center at Northwest Healthcare campus.
Professionally, Zycan had a successful career in waste management, working with his family at Zykin Brothers Solid Waste Disposal and later holding managerial positions at Brown Ferris Industries and Meridian Waste Company. He also consulted for IeSi Waste Corporation.
Beyond his professional and community achievements, Zycan enjoyed outdoor activities such as golfing, fishing, and hunting, and cherished moments spent with family and friends.
In a resolution passed by the council, they expressed their deepest condolences to Zycan's family and friends, recognizing his exemplary life and the impact he made in his community. A certified copy of the resolution will be sent to his family as a permanent token of appreciation for his contributions.
