In a recent government meeting, officials discussed an upcoming initiative aimed at promoting bike safety and pedestrian awareness among children in Iron County. Scheduled for October 9, this event marks the second year the community will participate in a national movement focused on educating youth about safe transportation practices, including proper crosswalk usage and the importance of wearing helmets.
Councilman Phillips highlighted that, as of now, Iron County is the only district in southern Utah participating in this initiative. The program aims to foster a safer environment for students traveling to school, with activities planned to engage local law enforcement and community members. The event will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 AM, just before school starts, and will include interactive elements such as distributing safety stickers and encouraging physical activity among students.
The initiative is supported by the active transportation committee and aims to involve local athletic teams to further engage the youth. Last year’s event was well-received, and officials are optimistic about enhancing participation this year. Additionally, the meeting included a mention of a community survey conducted last year, which will be reviewed by Dr. Fort Flint from Utah State University, indicating a commitment to ongoing community engagement and feedback.
Officials expressed their hope that council members will join in the festivities, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in fostering a culture of safety and awareness among the youth.
