During a recent meeting, Michelle Martin, president of the Barview Area Charleston Area Parks Association (BACAPA), provided an update on the ongoing developments at the Kappa Sports Complex, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The association is poised to enhance the complex with the addition of nine new baseball and softball fields, addressing a significant need for youth sports facilities in the community.

Construction is set to commence imminently, with contractors arriving to begin work on the fields located on Libby Lane, just before entering Charleston. The project, which has faced delays due to weather and funding, is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The new fields will cater to various age groups, including T-ball, rookie, minor, and major leagues, and will also meet high school softball requirements, potentially allowing for high school tournaments in the area.

In addition to the baseball and softball facilities, Martin announced plans for an 18-hole disc golf course, developed in collaboration with a local club. This course will be designed to competition standards, further diversifying recreational opportunities at the complex.

The economic impact of these developments is anticipated to be substantial, with Martin noting that tournaments could draw significant crowds, similar to those seen during basketball events. The association is also exploring the possibility of adding soccer fields, responding to community demand.

Looking ahead, BACAPA plans to host a golf fundraiser on September 14 and a grand naming ceremony for the park in the spring, where the park will be officially named after a local family. This event will also include the unveiling of a logo and the naming of various fields within the complex, recognizing the contributions of community partners.
