During a recent Atlantic Beach government meeting, community members advocated for the renaming of two local parks in honor of the late Garnet and Eleanor Ashby, who were prominent figures in the area. Bill Permiter and Sandy Martin presented their case, highlighting the Ashbys' significant contributions to the community, including Garnet's role as a founding board member of the Beaches Hospital and his involvement in establishing the Kona Skateboard Park. Eleanor was recognized for her leadership as the executive director of Leadership Jacksonville and received accolades for her commitment to community improvement.
Permiter emphasized that renaming Marvin's Gardens Park to Eleanor and Garnet Ashby Park would serve as a fitting tribute to the couple, who were known for their warmth and hospitality. Martin echoed this sentiment, detailing the Ashbys' long-standing residence in Atlantic Beach and their active participation in local initiatives. She noted that the couple's legacy included fostering community spirit and providing support to their neighbors.
The proposal aligns with the city's criteria for naming parks, as both individuals are deceased, and the park currently lacks an official name. The community members expressed hope that the city commission would approve the renaming, reflecting the Ashbys' enduring impact on Atlantic Beach.
In addition to the park naming discussions, concerns were raised about the maintenance of local facilities, including the status of a proposed dog park and reports of dead fish in a nearby pond. The meeting underscored the community's engagement in local governance and the importance of honoring those who have shaped the area’s history.
