In a recent government meeting, the Great Island Homeowners Association presented a continued notice of intent (NOI) for emergency sandbag reinforcement aimed at protecting coastal infrastructure following significant storm damage. The meeting, attended by various stakeholders including legal representatives and association members, focused on the urgent need for protective measures along Great Island Road, which suffered extensive damage during a storm on December 18, 2023.
Attorney Brian Wall, representing the homeowners association, outlined the emergency measures already undertaken, which included the placement of geotextile bags filled with sand to stabilize compromised dunes and protect the roadway. The second phase of the project involved covering these bags with sand to create a slope that mimics a natural dune, enhancing both protection and aesthetics.
The association is now seeking after-the-fact permission for the work completed, as required by an emergency certificate issued by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The DEP has provided a file number but also expressed concerns that the association is addressing as part of the ongoing process.
The meeting concluded with unanimous support for the continued efforts to secure the coastal area, highlighting the community's commitment to safeguarding their environment against future storm impacts. Further discussions are expected as the association works to resolve the DEP's comments and finalize the necessary approvals.
