Residents near North Perry Airport have expressed ongoing concerns regarding toxic emissions from piston engine aircraft, including lead, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter (PM), as well as the noise pollution generated by these flights. Over the past two decades, the government has acknowledged the harmful effects associated with exposure to these pollutants.
In response to these issues, Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr established the North Perry Airport Community Advisory Committee. This committee aims to facilitate communication between Broward County Aviation and the communities of Pembroke Pines, Miramar, and Hollywood, ensuring that residents' voices are heard regarding their environmental concerns.
Both Pembroke Pines and Miramar have formally submitted resolutions to the Broward County Aviation Department, advocating for specific testing of air quality in their neighborhoods. However, residents are still awaiting a formal response regarding the implementation of these tests. While references to testing at other airports have been made, the unique characteristics of North Perry Airport—such as its high population density and proximity to playgrounds, athletic fields, and homes located just feet from the runway—underscore the urgency for tailored assessments in this area.
