The Sussex County Life Saving Association team has made history by clinching first place at the National Lifeguard Championships held in South Padre Island, Texas, marking a significant achievement for the region. This event, often likened to the Super Bowl of competitive lifeguard surf racing, saw 79 lifeguards from nine beach patrol agencies compete in various individual and relay events. Notably, twelve members of the championship team hail from the Rehoboth Beach Patrol, making this Sussex County's inaugural national championship win, a feat previously only accomplished by lifeguards from California and New Jersey.
In other discussions, the city reported a street aid expenditure of $11,329.78 paid to Delmarva Power this month. Upcoming infrastructure projects include modifications to a sewer drain line for Grottoes, with subsequent rebar tie-ins and a significant concrete pour planned for the south side. To enhance safety during construction, additional temporary lighting has been installed along the construction fence on Baltimore Avenue and the boardwalk.
The city also reminded residents of the approaching deadline for the annual photo competition, \"Rehoboth Reflections,\" with submissions due by September 6 for the 2025 calendar. Photos must be high resolution and in landscape format.
Additionally, the deadline for the King Charles pilot project survey, aimed at assessing traffic calming and pedestrian safety measures, is set for September 2. The survey can be accessed on the city's traffic study page.
Finally, city staff will convene with representatives from Sussex County and Lewis BPW next week to discuss the status of information requests made during the July 8 Commissioners workshop. These entities are finalizing their responses, which will be presented at the upcoming September 9 workshop meeting. City staff is also in the process of identifying potential engineering consultants for a risk and financial assessment related to the proposal.
