In a recent assembly meeting, Assemblymember Joan Sawyer expressed her gratitude to Assemblymember Doctor Weber for his support of ACR 222, a resolution recognizing the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Sawyer, a proud parent of two HBCU graduates, highlighted the critical role these institutions play in fostering academic excellence and providing essential support for African American students.
Sawyer shared personal anecdotes about her children’s experiences at Morehouse College and Hampton University, emphasizing the unique support systems that HBCUs offer. She noted that her son, who graduated with a degree in biology and math, and her daughter, now a principal at LAUSD, benefited from an environment that understood and addressed the challenges faced by students of color. Sawyer praised the commitment of HBCUs to graduate professionals who contribute positively to their communities.
Assemblymember McKenna also voiced her appreciation for HBCUs, recounting her mother’s journey as a graduate of Prairie View A&M University and the legacy of excellence it instilled in her family. Both assembly members underscored the historical significance of HBCUs and their ongoing impact on African American communities.
Doctor Weber concluded the discussion by reaffirming the integral role of HBCUs in the nation’s history and requested the assembly's support for the resolution. The assembly voted unanimously in favor of ACR 222, further solidifying the recognition of HBCUs' contributions to education and society. The meeting also welcomed several guests, including prominent figures from the HBCU community, highlighting the collaborative spirit surrounding the initiative.
