During a recent city council meeting, discussions centered on a significant funding request from the McKinney Education Foundation (MEF) for $500,000 over three years, starting with $250,000 in fiscal year 2025. The council had previously reviewed this request in June but did not reach a consensus on its inclusion in the budget.
City staff presented various funding options for the council's consideration. One option would involve adjusting the tax rate to accommodate the MEF funding, which would increase the effective tax rate from 0.4155 to 0.4161, resulting in an additional $3.24 on residents' tax bills.
Alternatively, the council could consider reallocating funds from existing community grants. The current proposed funding for community grants stands at approximately $3.8 per capita in McKinney. Staff indicated that reducing allocations from these grants could free up resources for the MEF.
Another option discussed was to cut from supplemental requests, which total around $21 million, although only $6 to $7 million is available for funding. The council is now tasked with deciding how to proceed with the MEF funding request and where to source the necessary funds.
