During a recent government meeting, the Quakertown Community School District board addressed several key issues, including a new contract for internet services and ongoing staffing challenges.
The board unanimously approved a contract with the Bucks County Intermediate Unit for a countywide network service agreement with Quakertown Community School District. This agreement, which will provide fiber and internet access, is set to begin on July 1, 2024, and run through June 30, 2030. A minor correction of $700 was noted in the contract, but it was clarified that this was not due to any fault of the involved parties.
In addition to the contract approval, the board discussed ongoing staffing vacancies, particularly the 21 aide positions currently open within the district. Dr. Hoffman, a board member, indicated that the district is actively auditing these vacancies to ensure accurate reporting and to potentially reduce the number of listed openings. The board is also in the process of negotiating contracts with the district's labor attorney.
Public comments highlighted concerns regarding staffing levels, particularly in the custodial and special needs aide positions. John Weitz, a custodian, expressed frustration over low wages compared to neighboring districts, advocating for a pay increase to retain quality staff. He noted that many custodians are leaving for better-paying positions elsewhere, which could impact the quality of service within the schools.
Another parent, Ronald Berry, raised concerns about the adequacy of staffing for life skills programs, emphasizing the importance of having sufficient aides in place before the school year begins to ensure a smooth transition for students with special needs.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from board members to address these staffing issues and to consider the feedback from the community regarding employee compensation and support for special education programs.
