During a recent government meeting, community representatives outlined several key requests aimed at improving local infrastructure and safety in the Bronx area.
The first proposal highlighted the need for a new turf field at Allerton in Saint Charles Park, which would enhance recreational opportunities for residents. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the flooding issues at PS 96's schoolyard, which has been problematic during rainstorms. Although drainage systems were installed at the end of summer, further improvements may be necessary to prevent future flooding.
Another significant request involved the installation of additional pedestrian-level lighting along Bronx Park East and within Bronx Park itself. Community members emphasized the importance of having consistent lighting on all street lights, particularly in areas frequented by residents, such as the adult exercise equipment zone. The lack of adequate lighting during the fall and winter months, when it gets dark as early as 4:30 PM, poses safety risks for those using the park facilities.
Furthermore, the representatives called for enhanced lighting at the Allerton Turf Field and the nearby skate park, both of which are heavily utilized in the evenings. They suggested the installation of street lamp-style lights or sports field lights to extend usage hours safely.
Lastly, the community expressed a need for angled parking on the residential side of Bronx Park East, particularly between Pelham Parkway North and Allerton. This request stems from the loss of parking spaces due to recent reconstruction efforts along Pelham Parkway and the addition of new buildings in the area, which has increased the demand for parking.
These requests were presented in order of priority, reflecting the community's urgent need for improved safety and accessibility in their neighborhoods.
