Hammond Sportsplex expansion approved with innovative funding plan

In a recent meeting of the Hammond Redevelopment Commission, significant advancements were made regarding the expansion of the Hammond Sportsplex. The commission approved a contract with Bauer Construction Services for modifications and additions to the facility, including the relocation of soccer fields and the installation of new volleyball courts. The project is expected to be completed under budget and ahead of schedule, a positive development noted by the commissioners.

Additionally, the commission authorized a resolution to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the Hammond Board of Public Works and Safety. This agreement outlines the payment responsibilities for the Sportsplex expansion, with funding sourced from the Hammond Central Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district. The TIF will initially front the costs, which will later be reimbursed through the collection of a food and beverage tax, ensuring a zero-sum impact on the TIF.

The commission also approved the purchase of a vacant parcel at 50506 Fayette Street, strategically located near the upcoming downtown train station. This acquisition aims to control future development in the area, which is seen as a prime location for growth. The commission agreed to purchase the parcel for $94,000, a decision supported by all members present.

Lastly, a motion was made to table an agenda item that was not yet ready for discussion, indicating ongoing adjustments are needed before it can be addressed in future meetings.
