A recent government meeting highlighted the launch of a reef-friendly landscaping program aimed at protecting Hawaii's vital coral reefs. The initiative, spearheaded by the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council, seeks to mitigate the harmful effects of synthetic landscaping products, such as pesticides and fertilizers, which contribute to coral bleaching and marine ecosystem degradation.

The program director emphasized the economic and cultural significance of Hawaii's coral reefs, valued at approximately $10 billion and generating around $800 million annually. These reefs serve as crucial coastal buffers, sources of food, and habitats for diverse marine life, making their preservation essential.

During the meeting, the director explained the detrimental impacts of synthetic fertilizers, which can lead to nutrient runoff, algal blooms, and oxygen depletion in marine environments. The program advocates for organic landscaping practices that promote soil health and reduce reliance on chemical inputs. By fostering a healthy soil microbiome, the initiative aims to create sustainable landscapes that support both plant health and marine ecosystems.

The program features a certification system for properties, offering silver and gold statuses based on adherence to eco-friendly practices. Notable certified properties include the Four Seasons Resort on Lanai and Royal Lahaina Resort, with several others in progress. The initiative also includes educational courses for landscapers and property managers, focusing on holistic land care practices.

Support from the county of Maui has been instrumental in advancing this program, which includes ongoing test plots to demonstrate the effectiveness of organic amendments. The council aims to expand its efforts, emphasizing collaboration and innovation in preserving Hawaii's unique marine environments.
