The Calvert County Board of Education recently recognized the achievements of students from the Career and Technology Academy (CTA) who participated in the 2024 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia. Seven students represented the CTA and earned top 10 placements across seven contests, showcasing their skills in various career and technical education fields. The SkillsUSA chapter at CTA was also honored as a Gold Chapter of Distinction for 2024 and ranked fifth overall in the nation.
During the meeting, the board commended the dedication of SkillsUSA advisors, including Sarah Jones, Michelle Miller, and Kadesha Bleger, among others, for their efforts in preparing students for competition. The resolution passed unanimously, with board members expressing their support for the students' future endeavors in career and technical education.
Carrie Akins, principal of the CTA, emphasized the importance of Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) like SkillsUSA, describing them as integral to the educational experience rather than mere extracurricular activities. She highlighted the professional development opportunities these organizations provide to students.
Alyssa Lane, a senior at Northern High School and a participant in the SkillsUSA competition, shared her personal journey, noting how her involvement boosted her confidence and skills in cybersecurity. Lane placed fifth in the nation and expressed gratitude for the experiences and connections made through SkillsUSA.
The meeting also set the stage for the upcoming recognition of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), another key organization supporting students in business-related fields. The FBLA is preparing for its national conference in Orlando, Florida, in July 2024, further underscoring the commitment of Calvert County Public Schools to fostering career readiness among its students.
