During a recent meeting of the Colonial Intermediate Unit, key discussions highlighted community engagement and educational equity initiatives. Dr. Scheible reported on the successful opening of the Kalahari Resorts, which featured a performance by a former Colonial Academy student. Updates on construction at the Colonial IU main office and improvements to parking at Colonial Academy were also shared.
A notable highlight was the announcement of an Eagle Scout project by local youth Bridal Motard, who is raising $11,000 to build a sensory playground at the Early Learning Center in Bethlehem. Motard, who benefited from early intervention services, expressed his gratitude by spearheading this initiative to support other students.
The meeting also addressed the Task Force for Excellence through Equity, led by Dr. White, which reviewed the current equity plan and discussed strategies to diversify staff and eliminate disparities in academic success linked to race and family income. The group emphasized the importance of recruitment efforts and bias training for hiring committees.
Additionally, the foundation for the Bethlehem Area School District discussed financial statements and goals for the upcoming school year, including the rollout of teacher innovation and service learning grants.
In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Mr. Alozi acknowledged the contributions of the Hispanic community to the district, particularly honoring Mrs. Sergio Montz, the first Latina teacher in the district, and her impact on fostering representation within the educational environment.
The meeting concluded with reminders for board members to engage with resources and opportunities for professional development, as well as an invitation to the upcoming leadership conference at Kalahari Resorts. The next meeting is scheduled for September 25th.
