Phase 2a involves extensive mechanical renovations, including the installation of new boilers, mechanical ventilation systems in classrooms, and an accessible lift at the main entrance to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities. The project also includes upgrades to the vestibule and security access control features, which are still being finalized. The construction team is addressing unforeseen challenges, particularly with abatement issues related to the building's age, which have caused delays.

The project manager emphasized the importance of safety, especially as construction continues while students are present in the building. Concerns were raised about exposed piping and the safety of materials in classrooms. In response, it was confirmed that the Palumbo Group, the construction management team, has a full-time site superintendent overseeing the work during second shifts, which occur from late afternoon to late evening. The superintendent ensures that safety protocols are followed, including securing tools and materials.

The project manager reassured attendees that any safety concerns reported by staff or parents would be promptly addressed, with a clear communication channel established to relay issues to the construction manager. The team is committed to ensuring a safe environment for students while completing the necessary upgrades.

As the project progresses, the focus will shift to completing the mechanical work and preparing for the heating season, with expectations for the refrigerant piping to be finalized by the end of the year.
