New businesses set to transform downtown Midland

In a recent government meeting, the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) discussed several key topics, including leadership roles, meeting schedules, and new business developments in downtown Midland.

The meeting began with a review of committee reports, noting that the executive committee had not convened formally in the past month. However, informal discussions were held with Miller Canfield and consultants to better understand the bonding process related to ongoing projects in the area.

The DDA opened the floor for nominations for leadership positions, with the current chair expressing willingness to continue in the role. A motion was made and seconded to appoint the current chair and vice chair for another year, which was unanimously approved. The proposed meeting schedule was also adopted, setting regular meetings for the second Wednesday of odd-numbered months at 3 PM in the city hall council chambers.

The Economic Sustainability Committee reported on two incubator applications: one from a new business called Blue, which plans to offer fresh food products and is set to open soon in downtown Midland, and another from Craft Juice Company, which is transitioning from Craft Hemp Company to focus on fresh juice offerings. Both applications were recommended for approval, with the committee clarifying that Craft Juice Company is not duplicating previous funding requests as it represents a new business model.

The meeting concluded with updates on the recently completed pedestrian plaza and concerts, indicating ongoing efforts to enhance community engagement and local business support in the downtown area.
