In a somber session, the Pittsburgh Public Schools board of directors received heartfelt tributes to two beloved educators who recently passed away. Jerry Hazlett, a dedicated teacher and activities director at Alderdeis High School, died on July 24, 2024, after more than 23 years of service in the district. Known for his infectious laugh and genuine nature, Hazlett made a significant impact on students and staff alike. He joined the Pittsburgh Public Schools in 2001 and became the head football coach at Alderdeis in 2009, leading the team to its first city league championship in 50 years in 2017, followed by additional titles in 2018 and 2021. His legacy of fostering teamwork and leadership among students will be remembered fondly.

The board also mourned the loss of Mara Klein, a classroom assistant for autistic support at Carmel K-8, who passed away on September 18, 2024. Employed since 2020, Klein was celebrated for her kindness and dedication, positively influencing her colleagues and students. Her commitment to both education and environmental preservation inspired many within the school community.

Superintendent Wayne and Walters expressed deep gratitude for the contributions of both Hazlett and Klein, emphasizing their lasting impact on the lives of countless students and staff. The board acknowledged the profound loss felt throughout the district, as both educators were cherished members of the Pittsburgh Public Schools family.
