In a recent city commission meeting, Officer Emmanuel Torres Querasquilla was honored with a lifesaving commendation award for his heroic actions on July 26, 2024. Responding to a choking incident at Atlantic Technical College, Officer Torres successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver on an adult male who had a bottle cap lodged in his airway. His prompt intervention not only dislodged the obstruction but also saved the victim's life. This marks the second lifesaving award for Officer Torres in five years, highlighting his dedication and effectiveness as a police officer.

The meeting also featured a proclamation recognizing September 2024 as Hunger Action Month in Coconut Creek. Commissioner Wasserman emphasized the critical issue of hunger in South Florida, where approximately one million residents face food insecurity. The proclamation aims to raise awareness and encourage community action to combat hunger, with Feeding South Florida playing a pivotal role in providing access to nutritious food and advocating for those in need.
