In a recent city commission meeting, plans for a new Starbucks drive-through at Fire Creek Crossing were presented, sparking discussions on site design, traffic management, and public safety. Associate Planner Leah Piccati outlined the proposal, which involves converting an existing Boston Market location into a Starbucks café, complete with a drive-through facility.
The project site, measuring 0.91 acres within a 17.65-acre shopping center, is situated at the intersection of Kietzke and Redfield. Although the site is within 300 feet of residentially zoned property, Piccati noted that the actual project site is approximately 1,250 feet from the nearest residential area, mitigating potential concerns from local residents.
Key features of the proposal include an expansion of the drive-through lane to accommodate up to 10 cars behind the ordering kiosk and 17 cars total behind the payment window—double the standard requirement. The commission also discussed the need for improved traffic flow at the intersection, with plans to add \"do not block\" signage and lane markings to prevent congestion.
Architect Frank Coda, representing the applicant, emphasized the design's alignment with Starbucks' vision of creating a welcoming \"third place\" for customers. He confirmed that the new location would replace an existing Starbucks across the street and include enhancements such as landscaping and a safe pedestrian path from a nearby bus stop.
The commission members expressed familiarity with the site and engaged in discussions regarding the drive-through's design and traffic implications. Public comments were solicited, but no community members chose to speak on the matter.
The commission is expected to deliberate further on the proposal, weighing the benefits of the new Starbucks against potential impacts on traffic and local residents.
