The South Washington County Schools board convened at the district service center in Cottage Grove, Minnesota, acknowledging the land of the Mdewakanton Dakota people. The meeting began with roll call and the approval of the agenda, followed by a comprehensive update on community education programs presented by Jake Winchell, the director of community education.
Winchell highlighted the success of various summer programs, including Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE), which engaged over 73 families through 16 events. The early childhood screening program conducted 93 screenings, ensuring children are prepared for kindergarten. The Kids Club, a school-aged childcare initiative, reported a post-pandemic high of 903 enrollments, providing over 650,000 contact hours for children during the summer.
The board recognized the collaborative efforts of various support services, including nursing and nutrition services, which provided healthy meals and facilitated engaging activities for children. Notable events included a literacy focus, guest readers from the Cottage Grove Police Department, and a summer carnival that celebrated the program's success.
Additionally, the Schooley program served over 3,780 meals during 48 school visits and participated in community events. Summer youth enrichment courses offered 181 classes, resulting in 2,826 enrollments, although this number reflected a shift to independent contractors for program delivery.
Targeted services summer school saw a significant increase in enrollment, with 967 students participating, thanks to a change in eligibility criteria. The program focused on literacy, math, and science, providing meals and transportation for students. The extended school year program served 460 students, an increase from 373 in 2023, while credit recovery efforts resulted in over 400 credits earned across various high schools.
The meeting underscored the district's commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and support for students and families in the community.
