During a recent government meeting, officials took a moment to honor the late Bill Ashkin, a prominent figure in the Davenport community who passed away on Sunday due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Ashkin, who served for approximately 18 years on the Riverfront Improvement Commission, was remembered for his deep commitment to the city and its residents.
Described as one of the most civic-minded individuals, Ashkin was a lifelong resident of Davenport, dedicating his life to various community initiatives. His contributions extended beyond local governance; he was an accomplished engineer, having started his career with the Army Corps of Engineers before establishing his own practice. Additionally, Ashkin served as an Army Ranger and was a past president of the Rotary Club, where he received the prestigious Rotary International Service Award in 2016 for his efforts in eradicating polio in India.
The meeting highlighted Ashkin's extensive knowledge of the riverfront, both historically and technically, and his willingness to provide expert advice pro bono, reflecting his passion for community service. Visitation services for Ashkin are scheduled for Thursday and Friday at Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home and Saint Anthony's Catholic Church, respectively. His legacy of wisdom and dedication to Davenport will be remembered by many.
