Forest Grove Elementary School celebrated a significant milestone as it marked the completion of its first year in the NOAA Ocean Guardian School program. The event, attended by students, families, and community members, highlighted the school's commitment to environmental stewardship and ocean advocacy.
Seaberry Nashbar, an educational coordinator with NOAA, addressed the gathering, expressing her enthusiasm for the program that empowers students to become advocates for the ocean. She emphasized the importance of the \"6 R's\"—refuse, rethink, reduce, reuse, rot, and recycle—encouraging students to actively engage in practices that protect marine environments.
Throughout the year, students participated in various stewardship activities, including trash cleanups and educational presentations aimed at raising awareness about ocean health and the impact of plastic waste. The program aims to combat the staggering statistic that approximately 10 million tons of plastic enter the oceans annually.
Principal Arvin and Ms. Serpa, who spearheaded the initiative, praised the students for their dedication and hard work. They highlighted the collaborative efforts of teachers, parents, and community members in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility within the school.
The evening also featured student presentations, where young Ocean Guardians shared their experiences and the positive changes they have made in their school and community. Their enthusiasm was palpable as they discussed initiatives like zero-waste lunches and art contests using recycled materials.
In recognition of their achievements, Forest Grove Elementary received an official certificate from NOAA, celebrating their commitment to environmental education and advocacy. The event concluded with a group photo, capturing the spirit of teamwork and dedication to protecting the ocean.
As the school embarks on its second year in the program, there is a strong call for continued community involvement to expand the impact of the Ocean Guardian initiative, reinforcing the message that every small action contributes to a healthier planet.
