During a recent government meeting, Henry Young, the executive director of the Las Cruces Gospel Rescue Mission, provided a comprehensive update on the organization's efforts to combat homelessness in the region. Young emphasized the critical role the mission plays as the only indoor shelter in southern New Mexico, serving not only local residents but also individuals from surrounding areas.
Young highlighted the mission's extensive food distribution efforts, reporting that they provided over 905,000 pounds of food last year, contributing to a total of 2.2 million pounds distributed in collaboration with Casa de Peregrinos. The mission serves an average of 5,000 meals per month and accommodates between 45 to 50 individuals in its shelter.
The presentation also addressed the mission's need for funding to maintain and improve its facilities, which have not seen significant upgrades since their construction in 1992. Young outlined specific financial needs, including approximately $75,000 to complete a new building intended for meal service and temporary shelter during extreme weather conditions. He also mentioned the necessity of transitioning from swamp coolers to central heating and cooling systems, as well as the need for IT support.
Commissioners expressed their appreciation for the mission's work, with one noting the importance of the services provided to families and children residing on the campus. Young shared success stories of individuals who have benefited from the mission's programs, including job training and transportation assistance, which have enabled them to regain stability.
The meeting concluded with a call for collaborative efforts between the mission and local government to address the ongoing challenges of homelessness in the community. Young reiterated the importance of joint action to make a meaningful impact on the issue.
