In a significant move towards improving water access for tribal communities in Arizona, the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Act was discussed during a recent government meeting. This legislation aims to provide safe and reliable drinking water to the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe and addresses the pressing water needs of the Navajo Nation, where approximately 30% of homes currently lack access to potable water.

The settlement is seen as a crucial step in securing the water future for tribal members and alleviating ongoing uncertainties surrounding tribal water claims in the Colorado River Basin. Without this settlement, many tribal members would continue to face challenges in meeting their basic water needs.

Chairwoman Lewis expressed gratitude to all involved in the Yavapai Apache Nation settlement process, highlighting the dedication that has gone into finalizing the agreement over the past 15 years. The collaboration with the Bureau of Reclamation has led to the identification of various water sources and infrastructure options, ultimately determining that the delivery of CC Cragin Water through the Cragin Verde pipeline is the most viable solution.

This settlement not only aims to provide a sustainable water supply for current and future tribal needs but also includes measures to protect local groundwater aquifers from over-pumping. By reducing groundwater capture that feeds into the Verde River, the settlement helps maintain the river's base flow, thereby supporting Arizona's water future both locally and downstream.
