In a recent government meeting, officials revisited the Green Ribbon Program, initially funded for $1.4 million in May 2018. The program, aimed at enhancing local landscaping, has faced scrutiny regarding its execution and the materials used, particularly the presence of rocks instead of the intended plants and trees.
Council members expressed concerns about the project's direction, emphasizing that the community of Seabrook should have a say in the landscaping decisions. Questions were raised about the involvement of Clark Condon, the architect approved in July 2022, and whether public input sessions had been conducted with local residents and the Open Space Team (OST).
City officials clarified that the project encompasses more than just landscaping, including nautical-style bollards and other enhancements along the bridge. They noted that the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) had already contributed $1.1 million towards the project, with additional funding potentially available through a grant from TxDOT.
As the project progresses, officials are awaiting change orders and project closeout details to determine the financial implications for the EDC. The meeting highlighted the need for transparency and community engagement in local development projects, ensuring that residents' voices are heard in shaping their environment.
