Deep Creek Learning Center thriving despite growing pains

Superintendent Carpenter provided an update on the Deep Creek Learning Center, reporting that the program has made a strong start since its launch a month and a half ago. Initially aiming for 50 students, the center has exceeded expectations with 52 enrolled. Carpenter praised the operations team for their efforts in establishing the program on time and highlighted the positive attendance and cultural engagement among students.

However, the center is experiencing some growing pains as it seeks to carve out its own identity within the school district. Carpenter noted that while many students prefer to engage in activities specific to Deep Creek Learning Academy, there are still some who wish to participate in high school events. The administration is working to develop unique assemblies and activities to foster a distinct school culture.

Additionally, Carpenter mentioned the benefits of the center's downtown location, which has allowed students to connect with local businesses, including restaurants that have reported increased patronage from the school community.

In a separate discussion, the superintendent addressed ongoing issues with the Eagle Creek School, where a contractor faced challenges completing roof repairs and ultimately stepped back from the project. Carpenter acknowledged the district's responsibility to address the situation at Eagle Creek, clarifying that this refers to the school and not Eagle Creek Elementary School.
