The Saint George Marathon kicked off early Saturday morning with a spectacular 11-minute drone show, delighting participants and spectators alike. As dawn broke, a vibrant sea of salmon-colored shirts filled downtown Saint George for the annual mayor's walk, led by Mayor Michelle Bridal, who enjoyed the perfect weather alongside her family.
Runners of all abilities crossed the finish line, many capturing the moment with ceremonial photos. A representative from Saint George's Sister City in Japan expressed gratitude with a traditional gesture, highlighting the event's international ties. Following the race, walkers were treated to a scone breakfast hosted by the exchange club, a highlight for many participants.
In the competitive half marathon, Hajime Sakai from Ibigawa, Japan, claimed first place with a time of 1:04:13, having predicted his success the day before. Savannah Berry secured the top spot among women and second overall, breaking the women's record for the race. Berry, a returning participant, expressed her love for the city and the course, stating her desire to compete rather than just watch.
Ellie Stevens finished second among women and third overall, achieving a personal best by three minutes compared to her previous year’s performance. Many runners reported favorable conditions for the first part of the race, though temperatures rose as the sun came up.
To ensure runner safety amid the heat, marathon organizers had emergency medical teams on standby, equipped with IVs and an emergency room physician ready to assist if needed. Additional water sprayers were strategically placed along the route to keep participants cool. The event showcased not only athletic prowess but also community spirit and preparedness, making it a memorable occasion for all involved.
