In a recent Southlake City Council meeting, significant discussions centered around two requests for variances to the master sign plan for Southlake Town Square, specifically for Tommy Bahama and Sweet Paris Creperie and Cafe.
The council reviewed a proposal from Tommy Bahama to add two mural signs to their retail location at 160 State Street. Director Killo presented the request, highlighting the proposed locations for the murals on the southern and western sides of the building. The Arts Council recommended approval for the mural on the western side only, expressing concerns about setting a precedent and maintaining the original vision for Town Square. Despite some council members voicing support for both murals, the council ultimately voted to approve the mural on the western side and the southern mural, with a vote of 5-2.
The second item on the agenda involved Sweet Paris Creperie and Cafe, located at 228 State Street. The request included two signs that did not conform to the existing master sign plan. The council discussed the visibility issues caused by a large tree obstructing the view of the restaurant's signage. After deliberation, the council approved the request for both signs, with modifications to ensure they aligned with the aesthetic standards of the Town Square. The motion passed unanimously, reflecting a commitment to supporting local businesses while maintaining the visual integrity of the area.
Both decisions underscore the council's balancing act between fostering a vibrant commercial environment and adhering to established design guidelines.
