The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners officially recognized October 4, 2024, as the 60th anniversary of SCORE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to mentoring small business owners. The proclamation was presented by Commissioner O'Brien and highlighted SCORE's significant impact since its inception in 1964, having assisted over 17 million entrepreneurs nationwide.
Tony Flores, a certified mentor and diversity champion from SCORE Chapter 87, emphasized the organization's commitment to fostering small business development in Flagler and Volusia counties. He noted that SCORE volunteers provide mentorship at no cost, helping to drive local economic growth and support aspiring entrepreneurs.
David Ferguson, another SCORE representative, shared insights into the evolution of the organization, which has adapted to changing demographics and technology over the past six decades. He mentioned the inclusion of younger volunteers and the implementation of remote mentoring services, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed SCORE to maintain its support for entrepreneurs without interruption.
Flores also highlighted SCORE's collaboration with local economic development entities and initiatives aimed at empowering youth through programs like the Junior Chamber of Commerce in local high schools. He expressed gratitude for the county's recognition and support, particularly in light of ongoing efforts to enhance economic opportunities in areas like Bunnell.
The proclamation was unanimously approved by the commissioners, who acknowledged SCORE's vital role in the community and its contributions to the local economy. Following the approval, SCORE representatives were invited for a photo opportunity, marking a celebratory moment for the organization as it prepares for its milestone anniversary.
