In a recent government meeting, Multnomah County officials discussed the approval of a significant grant application aimed at supporting HIV services in the region. The Health Department is set to apply for approximately $4.3 million from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) under the Ryan White Part A program, which has been a critical source of funding for over 30 years.
Nisha Saxena, the interim director of the communicable disease, STI, and HIV prevention program, highlighted that 85% of the funding would be allocated to direct services for individuals living with HIV. These funds are essential for community-based organizations, including the Cascade AIDS Project and the QUEST Center, as well as for internal health department programs that provide vital support to low-income individuals across a six-county area.
Derek Smith, manager of the Ryan White HIV Services Program, emphasized the importance of the HIV Service Planning Council, which plays a crucial role in prioritizing funding allocations. Despite facing a decrease in funding over the past two years, the council remains committed to addressing health disparities and ensuring that services are accessible to all community members.
Public comments during the meeting underscored the ongoing challenges in combating HIV in the region. Community advocates, including Scott Moore, co-chair of the Ryan White Planning Council, expressed concerns about rising HIV rates and the need for sustained funding to support both medical interventions and community services.
Commissioners voiced their support for the grant application, acknowledging the critical role it plays in maintaining a robust system of care for individuals living with HIV. The board unanimously approved the grant submission, reinforcing their commitment to addressing health disparities and improving the well-being of affected individuals and families.
As the region continues to navigate the complexities of HIV prevention and treatment, the approval of this grant marks a significant step in ensuring that essential services remain available to those in need.
