In a recent government meeting, officials approved the construction plan for the Belmont Library project, a significant initiative aimed at expanding one of the busiest libraries in the country. The project, part of the Library Capital Bond Program, will increase the library's footprint from 6,000 to approximately 15,000 square feet, incorporating seismic upgrades and a new two-story addition that will connect to the existing brick structure.
Elise Hendrickson, Project Manager for the Belmont Library, highlighted the extensive community engagement that shaped the project’s design, including public meetings and surveys. A notable feature is the new children's and family area, which will be complemented by flexible meeting spaces and upgraded technology. The design also reflects community preferences, such as the winning color palette, \"Evening Glow,\" chosen through public voting.
The project has a current budget of around $28 million, with a proposed guaranteed maximum price of $17.3 million for construction. The library is expected to close to the public soon, with construction anticipated to begin shortly after receiving the necessary permits. Substantial completion is projected for winter 2025-2026, followed by a grand opening in spring 2026.
Commissioners expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its importance as a community hub. The meeting also addressed the ongoing challenges of parking availability, with plans for limited spaces on-site, encouraging alternative transportation methods among library patrons.
In addition to the library project, the meeting included a resolution to authorize property acquisition for the Rocky Point Road Sinkhole Repair Project, further demonstrating the county's commitment to infrastructure improvements.
