During a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the status and future of the Kalaza Great Barrington Regional Airport (KGPR), which has been included in the town's master plan since 2013. Despite being permitted in 2023, there has been no progress on the airport's development, raising questions among local residents and officials.
One resident expressed concerns regarding the airport's impact on their property, particularly in relation to the runway's length, which was inaccurately reported in previous records. The resident clarified that their property begins 20 feet from the end of the runway, contradicting earlier minutes from a meeting.
The airport, located off Seacon Crossroads, has been a part of the local economy since the 1920s, providing essential services such as flight instruction and charter flights. However, it is situated in a water quality protection district, which necessitates careful regulation of any growth or development to safeguard the town's water supply and maintain compatibility with surrounding residential and agricultural areas.
In response to inquiries about the airport's future, planning board members stated that there is currently no vision for the airport, as it is privately owned. Any proposals related to the airport will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as they come before the board. The need to update the master plan to reflect the current status of the airport was acknowledged, indicating a commitment to address inaccuracies and community concerns moving forward.
