During a recent government meeting held in the Katie Dorsett Council Chamber, interim city manager Chris Wilson provided a heartfelt update on the city's ongoing support efforts for communities in Western North Carolina affected by unprecedented devastation.
Wilson reported that nearly 80 personnel, including 36 officers, 26 firefighters, and 16 water resources crew members, have been deployed to assist with life safety support, water restoration, and coordination with North Carolina emergency services. The teams are currently working in 12-hour shifts, with a rotation planned for the end of the week.
In addition to personnel deployment, the city has established a donation opportunity through the Gifford Works area, encouraging residents to contribute to relief efforts. Wilson emphasized the importance of not driving into the affected areas, as ongoing evacuations and restoration efforts are still underway, and additional vehicles could hinder progress.
The meeting concluded with a moment of silence to honor those impacted by the disaster, as well as the families of Cynthia Coleman and Bob Kohler. Wilson expressed gratitude for the city employees who volunteered to assist their neighbors in need, highlighting the community's commitment to supporting one another during challenging times.
