During a recent city council meeting, officials recognized October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, highlighting the critical services provided by the Saint Paul and Ramsey County Domestic Abuse Intervention Project (SPIP). Established in 1984, SPIP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting victims of domestic violence through direct advocacy, safety planning, legal support, and resource sharing.
Executive Director Shelley Klein addressed the council, sharing that SPIP serves over 6,000 victims annually, many of whom are in dire situations, including homelessness and poverty. Klein emphasized the importance of community partnerships in creating a holistic response to domestic violence, noting collaborations with various organizations and local government entities to enhance victim support and safety.
Council members expressed their gratitude for SPIP's work, with several highlighting the alarming statistics shared by Klein, including that over 72% of victims served identify as indigenous or people of color. The council also acknowledged the historical significance of Saint Paul as the first city in the nation to establish a domestic violence shelter.
The meeting concluded with the council unanimously adopting a resolution to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month, reinforcing their commitment to supporting victims and ensuring safety within the community. A photo opportunity followed the vote, symbolizing the collective effort to raise awareness and advocate for those affected by domestic violence.
