Volusia County Schools extend closures amid severe storm warnings

In a recent government meeting, officials addressed the community's preparedness as a severe storm approaches Volusia County. Emphasizing the importance of neighborly support, attendees were urged to look out for elderly residents and assist one another during this challenging time.

Patty Corr from Volusia County Schools announced that all schools and district offices will remain closed on Friday, in addition to Thursday, to ensure safety and allow for thorough assessments of facilities post-storm. The decision reflects a commitment to safety and readiness, with officials coordinating with county partners to ensure roads are passable for students and staff.

In a proactive measure, the school district will provide transportation assistance to residents in Pearson, dispatching two school buses to the town center to transport individuals to the nearest shelter at DeLand High School. The buses are scheduled to depart at 9 a.m. for those needing a ride.

Sheriff Chitwood highlighted the gravity of the situation, recalling the tragic consequences of previous storms, including five drownings in 2022. He stressed the necessity of having an evacuation plan and warned that emergency responses may be delayed due to hazardous conditions such as downed trees and power lines.

Additionally, a curfew has been established from 8 p.m. on Wednesday until 8 a.m. on Thursday, with the possibility of extension depending on the storm's impact. Officials reiterated the importance of preparation and caution as the community braces for the impending weather event.
