During a recent government meeting, the Goldsboro City Council discussed several key initiatives aimed at enhancing local governance and economic development.

The council began by addressing the existing resolution regarding the council code of conduct. It was noted that the current resolution aligns with practices in surrounding municipalities and is functioning adequately. The council decided to maintain the resolution in its current form until any necessary modifications are identified.

Moving into new business, the council explored a proposal for a business development vision forum. Samantha Darlington from the North Carolina Department of Commerce presented an update on the city’s economic development strategy, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive city economic development plan with short- and long-term goals. The forum aims to identify the city’s role within the broader economic landscape, particularly in underserved areas that lack development. Darlington highlighted that the only associated costs would be for travel, making the initiative financially feasible.

The council also received updates on the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) and the bike-pedestrian greenway plan. Christina Whitfield from Kimley-Horn outlined the MTP, which is a federally mandated document that must be updated every five years to secure federal funding for transportation projects. The plan includes a prioritization of projects based on safety, congestion, and community needs, with a focus on integrating bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

Steve Zamovsky from Alta Planning Design presented the bike-pedestrian greenway plan, which aims to create a more connected and safer network for non-motorized transportation. The plan emphasizes the importance of physical separation between vehicle traffic and pedestrian/bicycle pathways to enhance safety and accessibility for all community members.

The council's discussions reflect a commitment to improving local governance, fostering economic development, and enhancing transportation infrastructure, all while ensuring community engagement and accessibility. The next steps include finalizing the MTP and greenway plans, with public comments still being accepted to refine these initiatives further.
