During a recent government meeting in New Bern, community members raised concerns and questions regarding local engagement and relief efforts following Hurricane Helene. One resident expressed frustration over the lack of communication from some city officials, highlighting that not all calls were returned and that discussions were sometimes met with raised voices rather than constructive dialogue.
Greg Faye, another attendee, inquired about the city's role in the hurricane relief efforts, specifically asking how citizens could contribute and whether a unified long-term relief initiative could be established. In response, the city manager outlined the ongoing efforts, including the collection of goods for affected areas in western North Carolina. The city has set up multiple drop-off points for donations and has already prepared 19 pallets of goods for transport.
Additionally, the city has dispatched fire rescue crews and utility workers to assist with search and recovery operations and utility repairs in the impacted regions. The manager emphasized the importance of having a coordinated plan before sending aid, noting that previous experiences have shown the necessity of organized support to avoid hindering recovery efforts.
The meeting underscored the community's commitment to helping those in need while also highlighting the challenges of communication and coordination among city officials and residents.
