During a recent government meeting, the council discussed the Lake Benson Park master plan update, led by Parks and Recreation Director Maria Munoz Blanco. The primary focus of the meeting was the potential relocation of the park's boathouse to accommodate the development of the South Gardner Greenway along Buffalo Road. This relocation is deemed necessary to ensure a safe greenway corridor, as the current space is limited.
Blanco presented early concepts for the park's master plan, emphasizing the need for community feedback to refine the proposals. The park, which is over 25 years old, requires updates to maintain its status as a beloved community space. The proposed changes aim to enhance the park while preserving its character as a passive recreational area, avoiding the addition of athletic fields or other disruptive features.
The design team, led by Kaylee Gill from Withers Ravenel, outlined three conceptual plans for the park. The first two options maintain the existing layout while relocating the boathouse and adding amenities such as a nature playground and additional restroom facilities. The third option, which received less favorable feedback, proposed significant changes, including the removal of the existing large shelter in favor of a band shell.
Council members expressed strong sentiments about preserving the park's current character. Concerns were raised about relocating the playground and dog park, with calls for maintaining the park's simplicity and functionality. The council emphasized the importance of community input in the planning process, with plans for future meetings to gather feedback from park users.
Blanco noted that while there is currently no funding allocated for these updates, having a current master plan is essential for pursuing state and federal grants. The council's discussions highlighted the need for careful consideration of the park's future, ensuring that any changes align with community desires while addressing necessary maintenance and safety improvements.
