In a recent meeting of the Carrollton Farmers Branch Independent School District (CFBISD) Board of Trustees, members unanimously approved a consent agenda and discussed a significant resolution aimed at addressing educator compensation amid rising inflation.
The consent agenda, which included routine items, was approved without any requests for individual item discussions, passing with a 7-0 vote. Following this, the board turned its attention to a resolution emphasizing the critical role of educators and staff in the community and the state of Texas.
The resolution highlights the essential contributions of educators to civic, cultural, and economic well-being, citing findings from the Governor's Teacher Vacancy Task Force. It notes that despite a substantial state budget surplus, educators have not seen salary increases that keep pace with inflation, which has exceeded 17% in recent years. The board expressed concern over the retention and recruitment challenges facing schools due to stagnant compensation.
The resolution calls on the governor and legislature to increase the basic funding allotment for public schools, which has not changed since 2019. It urges state leaders to fulfill their constitutional duty to support public education by providing necessary pay raises for educators and staff, thereby ensuring the continued development of well-rounded citizens and a capable workforce.
The board's commitment to advocating for better compensation reflects a broader concern for the educational environment and the need to support those who play a vital role in shaping future generations.
