In a recent government meeting, council members addressed significant changes in a solar energy project and the awarding of property and workers' compensation insurance contracts.
The council discussed the cancellation of a solar energy project initially approved in December 2022, which involved the purchase of five additional megawatts at a price not exceeding $36 per megawatt. However, due to a substantial increase in solar energy prices, the vendor requested a new rate of $43 per megawatt. In light of this escalation, the council, alongside other cities, opted to withdraw from the project. The motion to cancel the agreement was unanimously approved by the council members present.
Additionally, the council reviewed proposals for property and workers' compensation insurance. After issuing a request for proposals in May and consulting with an insurance expert, the Florida League of Cities was selected as the provider. The council voted to award the contract and delegated authority to the city manager to handle future renewals. This motion also passed with majority support, although one council member voted against it.
These decisions reflect the council's ongoing efforts to manage costs effectively while ensuring adequate coverage and services for the community.
