As the new school year commences, excitement is palpable within the community, highlighted by recent ribbon-cutting ceremonies for three newly constructed educational facilities: Old Mill Middle School South, Severn Run High School, and 2 Rivers Elementary School. These state-of-the-art buildings, which collectively represent an investment of nearly $298 million from state and county funds, are designed to provide bright and welcoming environments for students.
During the ribbon-cutting at Severn Run High School, Principal Rachel Kennelly honored the legacy of the Wade and Schillinger families, who operated Papa John's Farm on the site for over a century. In a heartfelt tribute, the school's driveway was named Wade Schillinger Way, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd of over 1,000 attendees.
Board members, including President Silkworth, expressed gratitude for the community's support in bringing these projects to fruition. Silkworth emphasized the importance of the enthusiasm displayed by students, staff, and families as they return for the 2024-25 school year, noting the positive energy observed during school visits.
Superintendent Dr. Bedell echoed these sentiments, sharing his experiences from visiting 21 schools in the first week of the school year. He remarked that this year's opening has been the most successful he has witnessed in his nine years as a superintendent, citing strong staffing and engagement levels among students and staff.
The community's investment in education is evident, and the anticipation for a successful school year is shared by all stakeholders involved.
