Residents of Shakopee voiced concerns during a recent city council meeting regarding the Valleycrest Trail Project, specifically a proposed 10-foot wide asphalt trail along Hackberry Lane. The project aims to enhance connectivity between local trails, but some community members believe the design may not suit the residential character of the neighborhood.

One resident, who lives across from the proposed trail, expressed his concerns about the trail's width and placement, suggesting that a 5-foot sidewalk would be more appropriate. He argued that a narrower path would provide adequate space for snow removal and maintain the aesthetic appeal of the area. The resident noted that he and another neighbor were only recently informed about the specifics of the project, raising questions about the notification process for affected residents.

City engineers explained that the 10-foot trail design includes a 2-foot buffer from the roadway for safety reasons, allowing for an 8-foot usable path. They emphasized that the trail is part of a larger system intended to connect various neighborhoods and that changing the design at this stage could breach the existing contract with the contractor, who is set to begin work shortly.

Council members acknowledged the resident's concerns but highlighted the importance of maintaining the integrity of the project as planned.
