In a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the ongoing renovation project at the MLK Center, detailing its phased approach, funding sources, and design elements. The project is set to unfold in three phases, allowing for continued operation of services while upgrades are made. The first phase focuses on essential improvements, including structural enhancements and mold remediation, with a budget estimate of $3.2 million.
The project has secured a total of approximately $6.5 million from various funding sources, including $2.5 million from ARPA funds, nearly $1 million from a Washington State Direct Appropriation, and a federal award of $3 million. As of now, $321,534 has been spent on the project.
The timeline for phase one includes finalizing designs and preparing a bid package by mid-October, with bids expected to open in November. Future phases will address accessibility, with plans to ensure the entire facility meets ADA standards. The second and third phases will expand the center's usable space from approximately 19,000 to 25,000 square feet, incorporating community areas, a library, and a compliant basketball court.
Council members expressed appreciation for the transparency and community outreach efforts surrounding the project. Discussions also highlighted the importance of incorporating artwork that honors Martin Luther King Jr. into the center's design. The meeting concluded with a commitment to keep the community informed as the project progresses.
