In a recent city council meeting, officials unanimously approved a resolution to update compensation rates for elected officials, marking the first change in 17 years. City Manager Mr. Brown presented the resolution, citing the need for a review due to rising demands for public service and the increasing cost of living.
The proposed adjustments will see the mayor's monthly compensation rise from $1,000 to $1,125, the vice mayor's from $600 to $779, and council members' from $500 to $650. These changes are set to take effect between December 2024 and December 2026, in accordance with Arizona state law, which prohibits salary increases during an official's term.
The council's decision follows a review of compensation structures in comparable Arizona municipalities, revealing that current rates are below average. The adjustments have been accounted for in the fiscal year 2025 budget, totaling approximately $4,825.
Councilman Jones motioned for the adoption of the resolution, which was seconded by Councilman Wiffle, and the motion passed without opposition. This resolution aims to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of local government while reflecting the contributions of council members to the community.
