During a recent meeting of the Fort Collins Historic Preservation Commission, members highlighted a successful educational event focused on women's suffrage, which took place on August 17th. Co-led by Rebecca Shields and another staff member, the historic walking tour attracted around 20 participants and was organized by the Poudre River Public Library District. The tour featured significant sites in the Old Town area, including the Opera House Business Block, where renowned suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt delivered a pivotal speech in support of the 1893 referendum that granted women the right to vote in Colorado.
Participants were surveyed to gather insights on their preferences for future educational programs, and the commission plans to continue collecting feedback at upcoming events. The meeting also included a reminder for attendees to subscribe to the commission's monthly newsletter for updates on events, surveys, and historical information.
In addition to the educational discussions, the commission considered a proposed policy aimed at expanding roofing options for historic buildings in Fort Collins. This proposal is intended to provide more flexibility in maintaining the architectural integrity of these structures while accommodating modern needs. Further details on the policy were expected to be presented in subsequent discussions.
