In a recent government meeting, officials from various Oakland County communities discussed the advancement of the 9 Mile Corridor project, aimed at enhancing connectivity and transportation options along 9 Mile Road. The initiative, which includes collaboration between Hazel Park, Farmington Hills, and other neighboring municipalities, is supported by a planning grant from the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG).
The completed 9 Mile Pathway Feasibility Study, finalized in May 2023, serves as a strategic guide for developing a cohesive pathway that promotes safe and equitable transportation. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) is set to be approved, solidifying the commitment among the involved communities to work together on the project.
City officials praised the innovative improvements already made along 9 Mile Road, which have garnered awards and set a model for the rest of the county. The project aims to extend the pathway from Hazel Park to Farmington, with future plans to include additional communities such as South Lyon and Novi.
The feasibility study not only outlines the conceptual plan for the pathway but also positions the communities favorably for grant applications, encouraging collaborative funding efforts. While the MOU is non-binding, it signifies a collective commitment to utilize the study as a framework for future developments.
City officials expressed optimism about the project, highlighting the importance of inter-community cooperation in securing funding and implementing improvements. The meeting concluded with unanimous approval of the MOU, marking a significant step forward in the development of the 9 Mile Corridor.
