In a recent government meeting, officials highlighted the progress of Vista Park, an upcoming affordable housing community in San Antonio. The development will feature 85 apartment homes, all designated as 100% affordable, with rents ranging from 20% to 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Vista Park aims to provide not only housing but also essential wraparound support services, including financial literacy programs, workforce training, health and wellness services, and mental health peer support.
The project aligns with the city and state’s commitment to creating affordable housing across all neighborhoods, as emphasized by the Community Outreach and Support Agency (COASA). The site, located on Nat Gedoches Road near Spring Farm Street, has been strategically chosen due to its low poverty rate and proximity to over 10,000 jobs within a two-mile radius. It has also received a significant boost with a $20 million award from the competitive state 9% tax credit application process, which is crucial for reducing construction costs and ensuring affordability for future residents.
Community engagement has been a priority throughout the planning process, with four meetings held since January to address local concerns regarding drainage, traffic, building height, and noise. Adjustments have been made, including reducing the building height from four stories to three and increasing the setback from neighboring properties. The project is now awaiting a zoning decision, having already received support from both city and state planning commissions.
Officials underscored that Vista Park represents more than just housing; it embodies a commitment to community values and priorities, reflecting the broader goals of the city council and the needs of local residents.
