During a recent government meeting, the Mesquite City Council received an extensive update on economic development initiatives from Beverly Abel, the Downtown Development Manager. Abel highlighted the significant contributions of volunteers and committee members who drive the Main Street program, emphasizing their dedication to revitalizing downtown Mesquite.
Abel outlined the strategic plan for the next 20 years, aiming to transform downtown into a vibrant destination with diverse goods and services. The plan employs a four-point approach focusing on organization, promotion, design, and economic vitality. This structured methodology has already yielded impressive results, including the creation of over 90 jobs and more than $12 million in reinvestment since the program's inception five years ago.
Key initiatives discussed included the ongoing facade grant program, which reimburses property owners for improvements, and the farmers market, which operates weekly from April to November. Abel also noted the importance of data-driven strategies in attracting new businesses and retaining existing ones, with a particular focus on dining and entertainment sectors.
Javan Gonzales, manager for Visit Mesquite, reported on tourism metrics, revealing an estimated 121,000 visitors in the last quarter, contributing approximately $58.2 million to the local economy. Gonzales highlighted successful partnerships with event organizers and the implementation of a content creator program aimed at enhancing Mesquite's online presence.
Rachel Flores, the Economic Development Division Manager, introduced new programming focused on business attraction, retention, and workforce development. She announced the arrival of Hytheon, a company investing $100 million and creating 141 jobs, as a significant win for the city.
