In a recent government meeting, Ormond Beach officials discussed the approval of a new public mural set to adorn the western wall of the Swillerby's Donut Shop, located at 200 East Granada. Planning Director Steven Spraker presented the proposal, which had already received unanimous support from the Ormond Beach Art District Board after a thorough review and suggested modifications to the artwork's design.
Commissioners expressed their enthusiasm for the mural, highlighting its representation of the city's history and its potential to enhance the downtown area's charm. Deputy Mayor Bradley praised the mural as one of the most visually appealing he had seen, while Commissioner Persis echoed this sentiment, noting its impressive design. Commissioner Tond emphasized the importance of the advisory board's input in refining the artwork, and Commissioner Sargent acknowledged the mural's significance as a welcome addition following the building's recovery from hurricane damage.
The artist, Shawn Johnson, was introduced during the meeting and is expected to begin work on the mural shortly. The city will own the artwork, which is part of a licensing agreement that allows for public art while adhering to existing mural ordinances that prohibit text.
In addition to the mural discussion, City Manager Joyce Shanahan reminded attendees of upcoming meeting dates, including the mayor's last meeting on October 15 and the new commission's oath of office on October 19. She also provided updates on the Performing Arts Center, which is nearing completion after a fire incident, with plans for a November opening and shows scheduled for early December.
